Civil Partnership Visas
What is it?
Civil partners of British citizens or of people present and settled in the UK can join their partner in the UK under the terms of a civil partnership visa.
Who should apply?
Applicants must be non-EEA nationals who are in a civil partnership with a British citizen or someone who is settled in the UK. Same-sex couples who are not in a civil partnership should apply for a long-term partner visa.
How long does it take?
Visa applications usually take 2-4 weeks to process once they have been submitted.
Basic requirements
To be eligible for a civil partnership visa, you and your partner must:
- be in a legal civil partnership
- both be 21 years old or more
- intend to live together in the UK
- not have begun your relationship after a decision was made to remove the applicant from the UK
- be able to support yourselves without using public funds
- have accommodation for yourselves and any dependents without using public funds.
What information do I need to provide?
You will need to provide:
- your original birth certificate
- evidence of your civil partnership
- evidence of the UK based partner’s employment (such as payslips) and recent bank statements
- evidence of your UK accommodation arrangements (mortgage or rental agreement)
- relevant letters between you and your civil partner
- any divorce certificates, death certificates or final dissolution orders from previous civil partnerships
- evidence that the UK-based partner is legally settled in the UK (a certified passport or registration certificate).

Common questions
- Is there a quota agenda?
- No, there is no restriction on the number of people entering the UK legally on a civil partnership visa.
- Does age difference matter?
- No, as long as you are both over 21, the age gap is irrelevant.
- Does it matter if I haven't met my partner in person?
- You must have met your civil partner in order to qualify for the visa, but Visas for Couples can help make arrangements for you if you have not yet met your partner.
- When I get my visa will I be allowed to work in the UK?
- Yes. Being in the UK on a civil partnership visa allows you to undertake any type of employment without needing permission from the Home Office.
- How long must I wait before I’m eligible for Indefinite Leave to Remain?
- After two years in the UK under the terms of a civil partnership visa, you may apply for indefinite leave to remain, which allows you permanent residency in the UK.
- How much do Visas for Couples charge?
- Our fees are based on your individual circumstances, taking into account the complexity of your case and whether you have previously been refused a visa. The government also charges a fee for processing your visa application.
